I gathered with souls
in quiet pursuit
of the peace and serenity
found in the sitting.

In this room by the river
She asked us not to clear our minds
But instead to awaken
To be inside the cylinder we call a body,
To feel its container, crown to toe.
She asked us to remember.

Like a buzzing fly
The words of a wise one
Insisted they be heard.
Like the wings of a hummingbird
They beat against my eyelids —

The Koan
A single word:
Interbeing,
Clouds in our tea.

And with eyes closed I saw
A tiny pinprick of light
Grow and explode
With a sound that
No one was present to hear.

And from that singularity —
Every galaxy, each star
Every man, every woman,
Every daughter and son,
Every fish, and fowl,
Boulder, bush and tallest tree,
Each grain of sand and ocean wave —
Trace their roots to the same source.
Our true selves born of the same mother
And through the breath —
We remember.
